Sports games are one of the most popular genres out there, but for the most part, are forgotten as quickly as they came, due to the culture of yearly updates and their semi-disposable nature.
However, just like every genre, they deserve some love and nostalgia as well, as this was the era where many of the biggest franchises in gaming took shape. However, to look at every sports game or even just every entry in one franchise could be a bit repetitive, boring, and just no fun. Instead, will take a look at one Sega system’s library of sports titles, in this case the Sega CD. Due to its lifespan but at least semi-decent support, it takes a great snapshot of sports gaming at the time, and doesn’t have many repeats, displaying a great range of different sports and styles.
Due to the large volume, we’ve split this up into two parts. This first part takes a look at the “normal” sports games that play like the sport its based on, like Madden or NBA Jam. Part 2 will take a look at the “weird” stuff that the Sega CD had to offer, like Sports Trivia games, and fully FMV-based games like Prize Fighter!
